Course Overview
The beginner level is a communicative English language course designed by Oxford University (English File 3rd Edition). The course has been supplemented by a variety of communicative and business-related projects to ensure the outcomes of the programme. The course aims to further develop students’ language skills and strategies in reading, writing, listening and speaking to a level where they can apply their language skills to longer, more complex material and tasks that help build confidence and prepare students to proceed to the elementary level. The course is based on the Common European of Reference for Languages (CEFR) Level A1.
Objectives
During the course, students will be able to:
- Ask and answer simple questions on very familiar topics.
- Use simple phrases and sentences to describe where they live and people they know.
- Use basic verbs to describe their favourite hobbies and daily life activities.
Listening objectives
- Understand familiar words and very basic phrases about themselves, their family and immediate surroundings when people speak slowly and clearly.
Reading Objectives
- Understand familiar names, words and very simple sentences, for example on short reading passages, notices and posters or in catalogues.
Writing Objectives
- Write a short, simple postcard, for example, holiday postcards.
- Fill in forms with personal details, for example entering their name, nationality and address on a hotel registration form.
Structure and Duration
The course has 12 units where each is carefully designed to develop students’ four main skills reading, listening, speaking and writing. The course also pays good attention to grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation.
Duration
The course duration is 84 guided-learning hours which translates into 10 hours of work per week over approximately two months. The course will require around 100 hours of independent study.
Assessment and Grading System
There are regular formative assessments throughout the module and there is a summative test at the end. All assessments are based on the language and skills studied and include:
- Progress tests (Reading, Vocabulary, Grammar and Structure, Pronunciation, Listening, Writing)
- Weekly writing tasks and quizzes
- End of module Speaking test
- End of module tests
- Participation and attendance
Certificates
Participants who successfully pass the examinations will receive the ESOL certificate from IDEL.
